POETRY Hands Up

The Leeds Peace Poetry competition has been an annual event since 2003, attracting thousands of entries from schools, young people, adults and groups. Through the initiative, we aim to increase skills in poetry, and to encourage people to explore peace and justice issues through creative writing. Click here to read winning poems from past years.

The 2010 competition theme - in keeping with National Poetry Week - will be 'Home'. But it's more than just a competition! This year, workshops will be running throughout the summer and into the autumn (in conjunction with arts@trinity, and Trinity & All Saints College), with 300+ people of all ages having the opportunity to work alongside experienced poets to explore a variety of peace topics. Schools, community groups, reading groups and libraries are all participating in this extensive poetry project. And poet Rommi Smith will also be hosting an open mic evening at Chapeltown library.

Competition submissions will be due in in October, and winners will be announced in November. We are also pleased to announce that - as well as our long term partners at the Yorkshire Evening Post - we also have BBC Leeds onboard for 2010. Full info on this year's competition will be available shortly.

Leeds Peace Poetry is a partnership between T4P, Education Leeds and arts@trinity. Many thanks also to Leeds Community Foundation for their support. For more info, please contact us.
