Peace
Poetry

The Leeds Peace Poetry competition – running since 2003 – has become a very well-established annual event, each year attracting 1000s of entries from schools, young people, adults and community groups. Through the initiative, we aim to increase skills in poetry, and to encourage people to explore peace and justice issues through creative writing.

The Peace Poetry competition is taking a new shape and timeframe for 2011-2012, to work with changes in resources, partners, and to make the most of the Olympic build up and momentum. We’ll be working in new partnerships with the University of Leeds and the West Yorkshire Playhouse, and building on the partnership with Leeds Library Service.

The next competition will be delivered from January – July 2012, and will feature creative writing workshops and work with mentors.

How to apply -

The theme this year is ‘TRUCE’ inspired by the Olympics. See flyer Truce . The competition is open to all. There are 3 main categories: primary school age, secondary school age; and adults. In each category collective as well as individual entries are welcomed. Entries should be no longer than 24 lines, previously unpublished and limited to a maximum of 2 per person.

Each entry must include the writer’s name and contact details.  Manuscripts and typescripts will not be returned and the judges’ decisions are final. Closing date for entries is Friday 23 March. Send entries to poetry@t4p.org.uk

Leeds Peace Poetry is a partnership between T4P, Leeds Children’s Services, Leeds Library Services, the University of Leeds, the West Yorkshire Playhouse, arts@trinity, Leeds Trinity College, and the Yorkshire Evening Post. Thanks all our partners and to chief judge Rommi Smith (www.rommi-smith.co.uk).
